In a developing country like India, the burden of epilepsy occurs in 1-5% of the population and about 20-30% of these are medically refractory. Intractable epilepsy occurs with an approximate incidence of 6/100,000/year and with a prevalence of 2-3/1000 (> 1 episode/year). Extrapolating this, among the nearly one billion population of India, there would be about five million epileptics and about one million with medically refractory epilepsy; many of the latter would be candidates for evaluation for the possibility of a surgical cure. While clinical facilities exist in numerous centers across the country, facilities to treat ‘therapy resistant’ and intractable epilepsy, particularly epilepsy surgery exists only at a few centers. Infrastructure to build research/ clinical laboratory to bridge clinical and basic research does not exist till date anywhere across the country. This unique centre will help bridge this gap as to enhance our understanding of epileptogenesis, better diagnosis and localization of the epileptogenic foci and to foster newer techniques of treatment.
